Some of my favorite memories were made in the kitchen — gathering with family to bake something special for the holidays, birthdays, or just because. At the time, it was simply fun. I didn’t realize how much those moments would shape me until years later.

My grandmother always had a loaf of banana nut bread waiting when I came to visit. I was only six, but I’d practically eat the whole thing myself. That simple act of love — her thoughtfulness, the smell of that bread, the comfort of those visits — has stayed with me ever since.

Then there was my aunt, who could put Mrs. Claus to shame. Every holiday, her home came alive with the smell of home-baked goodness. She’d spend days baking hundreds of colorful cookies, and I’d be right beside her — mixing, decorating, nibbling. That’s where I learned what baking can really do:

Those passed-down recipes became part of me — anchors of family and tradition. As I grew older, I found myself passing them on to my own kids. Watching my boys feel at home in the kitchen — experimenting, baking, and creating from scratch — is one of my greatest joys.

There’s a certain pride in making something with your own hands, sharing it with the people you love, and seeing their faces light up with delight.
